They Don’t Get Out Much – Silent Sunday

Silent Sunday

#tweetyour16yearoldself

Do you tweet (yet)? I do. Quite prolifically infact – if you hadn’t already figured it out already by the feed of all my latest tweets running down the right hand column of this blog… –>>>

Last Wednesday and Thursday (3rd & 4th November) saw a trending hashtag topic: #tweetyour16yearoldself – What would you say if you went back in time and met up with yourself at the age of 16 years old? (And if you really want to get in on the game with the appropriate rules, then keep it under 140 characters in true Twitter stylie…)

A few days later I read Chickenruby‘s blog. She only wrote 2 tweets for the topic. I realised I wrote far more than 2. Clearly, I have some issues with the way I my life was going around the 16 year old mark. There are a fair few things that I would like to have said to myself, even though I’m fairly certain that the hormonal teenager I was would never have cared to listen to a 30 year old mother of two and what she felt would be invaluable advice. Hell. I didn’t listen to my own mother, so why would I listen to somebody else’s??

So. I thought I’d list all my #tweetyour16yearoldself tweets here, so you can get a glimpse, albeit small, of what I feel I could have benefited from knowing. The issue that came up more than I expected was definitely a surprise to me. Make of that what you will…:

#tweetyour16yearoldself You are not a munter

#tweetyour16yearoldself Education is not the be-all & end-all of your life

#tweetyour16yearoldself Trust your instincts & get into creative arts or design. Infact. Ignore A levels altogether!

Don’t go to uni until you’ve taken at least one year out & if/when u do go, don’t get tied down w/ that bf! #tweetyour16yearoldself

Ditto this RT @nickie72: #tweetyour16yearoldself sleep around a bit – u’ll be tied to one bloke for the rest of ur life in a couple of yrs

All that time spent on ur hotmail & ICQ can be harnessed & nurtured into a job u know. Learn more! #tweetyour16yearoldself

I needed that advice, man! RT @DJMisterU: #tweetyour16yearoldself tell @sukkwan to be more promiscuous before she shacks up :D

Cut ur hair, short. Long hair looks crap on u. #tweetyour16yearoldself

Be a bit promiscuous. Definitely – for self confidence & awareness. Honestly. #tweetyour16yearoldself

And here was my favourite tweet from somebody else on the topic:

RogerQuimbly My 16 year old doesn’t have an elf. #tweetyour16yearoldself

So. What would you say? (comments welcome….. I think :p)

Straight Cupcaking – The First Gig

***Firstly, let me say a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to the newlyweds: Mr & Mrs Dunn-Mines, who were married this Saturday, 6th November 2010 at the Downe Arms, Wykeham, Scarborough. May they enjoy a long and healthy life together, full of good times and fond memories. Love to you both [big sloppy kiss] x!***

On with the blog…!

This week has seen my first ever cupcake gig. That is to say, I was the cupcake supplier for my very dear friend Kath at her Big Wedding Day on Saturday to her very lovely Ian.

So 60 chocolate cupcakes in gold foil cases, vanilla frosting in ivory or violet, and a 5 tiered perspex cupcake stand… here’s how it went, from pre-measuring the ingredients through to transporting, in pictures…

The pre-measured ingredients…

image

The borrowed (from SIL) electric hand mixer – starting the baking process…

image

The first two batches. Note to self: Need a second cooling rack…

image

Three batches cooled and packed into boxes, with the remaining empty boxes waiting to be filled…

image

All cupcakes baked, present & ready to be iced…

image

Making up a big momma batch of vanilla frosting – 4 times the amount I have ever made before using my new cheapy electric hand whisk & stand from Lidl. Love. It…

image

12 ivory topped cupcakes with white chocolate star and a delicate sprinkling of gold edible glitter. The original plan was to do 15 in this style, but I’d already added the colouring to all of the remaining frosting before I remembered. Yikes…

image

Adding the colouring for the purple/violet frosting

image

There’s a dozen purple frosted cupcakes at the back there with the ivory sugar pearls. The rest of the cupcakes are all lined up and patiently waiting their turn…

image

Nearly there! Two more left in the box on the far right to top with frosting & pearls. Then the last dozen cupcakes have just frosting & a light sprinkling of purple edible glitter…

Close up of one of the finished boxes of cupcakes…

image

My rather glamourous packing of the cupcakes for transportation…

image

All loaded into the car and ready to go…

image

At the Downe Arms, Wykeham. The table for me to set up…

image

The tiered acrylic cake stand. The first time it’s ever been used!

image

Arranging the cakes on the stand. *gulp*…

image

All set up and ready to go. The girls/bride also added some lovely ivory chiffon around the table to dress it up. But I forgot to take a picture of that detail (although you will see it in the last photo)…

image

Approx 10:45pm that same night. They were all eaten shortly after this photo. Me = Very pleased!

Overall I really really enjoyed the whole process and experience. It helps that it was for such a dear friend ;) But it’s definitely something that I will be planning to sell/do from home for the odd extra penny here and there. I’ve even bought www.straightcupcaking.com (even though I have nothing to put up there yet). Most importantly though, I need to *seriously* work out my pricing structure…

Err… *scratches head*
